Race Day Recap
Congratulations to all participants in San Diego who came out for another awesome Great Urban Race! The sunny weather made for an exciting day of adventure. All participants started the day off at Whiskey Girl and went on to explore the hidden gems of San Diego. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required quick thinking, problem solving, and physical tenacity!
Throughout the day our participants went to Hot Licks where they faced the spicy challenge of eating larva and hot sauce. We were very impressed with everyone’s balancing techniques at Little Yoga Studio and who could forget the record challenge at Feel It! We’d also like to thank everyone again who participated in the charity clue and donated to Toussaint Academy.
Congratulations go out to our first, second, and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2013 National Championship in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the chance to compete for $10,000 in cash prizes! In first place, we had Carpe Bearem finishing in 1:50! Top Gun finished second with a time of 1:54 and Whale’s Vagina grabbed the third place spot at 2:07!
Well-deserved rounds of applause were given to some great costumes at Great Urban Race San Diego, but it was George Bush who won the crowd over. Thanks to all the teams who brought some added spirit to the day!
Thanks to our St. Jude volunteers, all of our clue locations and of course all of our amazing participants. The GUR crew had an excellent time and we look forward to seeing you again, San Diego!
Team Name: Carpe Bearem
CHAMPION INTERVIEW (for the website):
How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?
7th – this was their first time getting first place!
When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?
Take a picture and send it to our tech guy (Roger) who helps with all of the clues. We usually use students to help out but it’s midterms right now. We also look over the clue sheet and see if there’s any address we can identify and rush out to while Roger does his thing!
Did you use public transportation during the race?
We went on a trolley for one block!
Did you utilize ground support? (phone-a-friend) If yes, how did you choose your team?
Yes, we have to! Roger is a very smart guy.
Did anything set you back today?
We were using Apple maps, which directed us in the wrong way and we ended up missing a couple clues on our way out. We needed to solve the clues faster and we tried really hard not to yell at each other.
What was your favorite challenge?
Our favorite challenge was Bub’s and yoga!
What’s your team motto/theme song?
Don’t quit – just do it!
What role do each of you play on the team?
William is more of a map guys and Katie is more of a physical one. Williams height was also a huge help on the team. Katie has done seven of these races so she knew what she was doing!
Any words of wisdom to future racers?
Keep having fun! Never forget to have fun. Arguing wastes time!
In the event of a Disaster including hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism, etc. the race director and The Great Urban Race staff will decide whether or not to cancel the event based on the safety of participants and staff.
