Congratulations to the over 1100 racers that participated in the fourth Great Urban Race Boston!  The weather held out for us, the costumes were outstanding and we had an unforgettable time!

Racers navigated the streets of Boston and performed a variety of crazy activities!  Along the way they completed challenges including a short lesson from the Boston School of Guitar at Columbus Park, translating a secret message in Braille at Nick Varano’s Famous Deli, learned a remixed version of the YMCA dance at the Huntington Avenue YMCA and followed their nose to decipher scents at Tealuxe Tea Bar.

We crowned The Fast and the Furious our Boston champions with a mind-blowing time of 1:26!  The Zack Attack took second place with a time of 1:34, followed by third place team Homo Harvardian at 1:37.  Our Top Family Team, Where Am I? couldn’t have been more excited when they crossed the finish line at 2:29! 

Congratulations to our St. Jude Challenge winner, I Want To Go To There.   A huge thanks to our St. Jude Top Fundraiser, Team Yo Bartender, Jobu Needs a Refill! which raised $1,836! And a big thanks to all of our St. Jude Heroes who raised a whopping $12,678!

Over 25 teams took the stage at Game On! for the costume contest.   The contest was a close call between Where’s Waldo and the hilarious Say “Goodbye” to Your Enchiladas.   Say “Goodbye” to Your Enchiladas got the crowd on their side with their comedic skills and wore their sashes with pride as they hoisted their trophy in the air.

Thanks to all of our volunteers, St. Jude, Women’s Lunch Place, Society of Arts and Crafts and the National Braille Press. The GUR Crew is excited to return to Boston next year and already has ideas brewing!

Champion Interview:

Have you ever participated in a GUR before?

This was our first GUR and we’re so glad we participated!  We’ll definitely get our friends to come back for more insanity next year!

How did you prepare for the race?

We spent the evening before discussing contingency plans, hypothesizing cost-benefit analysis scenarios and downing beers.

What was your overall race strategy?

We solved as many clues as we could right off the bat, and set off for the closest location while we waited to hear from our wonderful friends.

Did anything go wrong during the race?

The humidity may have slowed The Fast but definitely further enraged The Furious.

What was your favorite clue? Why?

Dancing at the YMCA because the energetic dance instructor made us dance like happy ridiculous fools.

What was the most memorable part of the day?

Seeing fellow racers cheer each other on as they crossed paths, especially the teams with outrageous costumes.

Any secrets to your success that you’d be willing to share?

Spend the extra time to map clues so you don't need to backtrack.
