Race Day Recap

Congratulations to all Masterminds in Toronto who conquered the 2014 Great Urban Race! All participants started their adventure at Fionn MacCool’s and then went on to discover the hidden clues in their city. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required quick thinking, problem-solving, and physical tenacity!

Throughout the day our participants made a stop at PawsWay where they visited some adoptable pets and completed a done balancing challenge. They also completed a mustard sampling challenge at St. Lawrence Market and tested how well they knew their teammate at Bond Place Hotel.

We’d like to give big high-fives to our first, second, and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2014 National Championship in Vancouver on August 9 where they’ll have the chance to compete for $10,000 in cash prizes. In first place, we had In First Place finishing in 2:06! Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Might Lose. finished in second with a time of 2:11 and Captains Capes grabbed the third place spot at 2:!2.

Thanks to all of the teams who dressed up and brought some added spirit to the day. A special shout out goes to I Thought They Said Rum for winning the costume contest! We would also like to thank our SickKids volunteers, all of our clue locations, and of course all of our amazing Masterminds! The GUR Crew had such an enjoyable time and we hope to see you again later this year in Vancouver.

Champion Interview

How many times have you participated? Are you a past champion?

Ken has participated but Claire has not.

When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?

We each would take two clues and solve, for a good chunk of the clue sheet. We solved the rest as we went along, starting with the furthest clue.

Did you use public transportation during the race?

Once for one stop! But we got off because it was too slow.

Did you utilize ground support? If yes, how did you choose your team?

Did anything set you back today?

Identifying the third mustard flavor at the clue stop!

What was your favorite challenge?

Gone Sailing. It was right on the water and a beautiful day!

What’s your team motto/theme song?

We don’t have one.

What role do each of you play on the team?

Claire would plan the route while Ken did the challenge.

Any words of wisdom to future racers?

Utilize red lights effectively and pick a circular route and plan as much as possible as opposed to going in the order on the clue sheet.
