Race Day Recap
Congratulations to all Masterminds in Jacksonville who conquered the 2014 Great Urban Race! All participants started their adventure at Mellow Mushroom Avondale and then went on to discover the hidden clues in their city. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required quick thinking, problem-solving, and physical tenacity!
Throughout the day our participants went to European Street Café where they had to shoot darts into buckets that were on their partners head! Another favorite was Jenks House Bed & Breakfast where participants had to complete the puddle jumper challenge. Also, who could forget Shampoo Cut and Color Salon where participants, without using their hands, had to transfer bobby pins stuck to their foreheads with gel.
We’d like to give big high-fives to our first, second, and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2014 National Championship in Vancouver on August 9 where they’ll have the chance to compete for $10,000 in cash prizes. In first place, we had I’d Tapa That For Bagel Love finishing in 1:44! Dueces of Jax finished in second with a time of 1:48 and The Exes grabbed the third place spot at 1:55.
Thanks to all of the teams who dressed up and brought some added spirit to the day. A special shout out goes to Los Exploradores for winning the costume contest and Chicks From This Sticks for winning the middle man award! We would also like to thank our St. Jude volunteers, all of our clue locations, and of course all of our amazing Masterminds! The GUR Crew had such a great first time in Jacksonville and we hope to see you again later this year in Vancouver!
Team Name: I’d Tapa That For Bagel Love
How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?
We have never participated before! This was our first time!
When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?
Our first step was to take pictures of the clue sheet and send them to our ground support.
Did you use public transportation during the race?
No, the public transportation is pretty limited here.
Did you utilize ground support? (phone-a-friend) If yes, how did you choose your team?
Yes, we used one of our friend’s who is a blogger. She is very technology-savvy.
Did anything set you back today?
Yes, we backtracked almost two miles because we solved the farthest clue first. There were also a couple small domestic arguments that happened during the race that set us back a little.
What was your favorite challenge?
Our favorite challenge was European Street Café.
What’s your team motto/theme song?
If you ain’t first, you’re last.
What role do each of you play on the team?
Olga is the human GPS and Dan is the muscle. He also does all of the prep work.
Any words of wisdom to future racers?
Have good ground support! We want to say a special thanks to our support, Kristy O’Connor (3peppers-recipes.com).
