Race Day Recap
Congratulations to all participants in Washington D.C. who came out for another awesome Great Urban Race! We had about 500 Masterminds at the event and the beautiful weather made for an awesome day of adventure. All participants started the day off at McFadden’s and went on to explore the hidden gems of D.C.! Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required quick thinking, problem solving, and physical tenacity!
Throughout the day, our participants showed their bravery when holding tarantulas and lizards at Bob’s Critters. We were very impressed by the pizza tossing skills at Wise Guy NY Pizza and were glad our Masterminds got some extra team bonding in when teammates were handcuffed together at Crime and Punishment!
Congratulations go out to our first, second, and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2013 Championship Race in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the chance to compete for $10,000! In first place, we had Rectangle America Megaphone Monday Butthole! Team Nattitude finished second andGeek Justice grabbed the third place spot!
Well-deserved rounds of applause were given to some great costumes at Great Urban Race D.C., but it was The Lou Whos who won the crowd over. Thanks to all the teams who brought some added spirit to the day!
Thanks also to our St. Jude Heros, especially Team America who raised an amazing $1,684! We also want to thank the St. Jude volunteers, all of our clue locations and of course all of our amazing participants. The GUR crew had a great time and we look forward to seeing you next year, D.C.!
With Rectangle America Megaphone Monday Butthole
How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?
Half of the team participated in ’09 and ’10. The other half has never participated before. It was everyone’s first time winning.
When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?
Worked as a team to solve all the clues. Solved the clues inside first, then went to the farthest clue first and even decided which clue to skip.
Did you use public transportation during the race?
Twice, Metro once and bus once.
Did you utilize ground support? If yes, how did you choose your team?
No. We all knew the city really well and didn’t map anything.
Did anything set you back today?
One of the team members got stuck behind a funeral procession at a crosswalk.
What was your favorite challenge?
Crime and Punishment/Wise Guy NY Pizza/Miss Pixies (Bob’s Critters)
What’s your team motto/ theme song?
“I Would Walk 500 Miles” by The Proclaimers
What role do each of you play on the team?
Xavier: challenge do-er/master
Sean: pace setter/”golden retriever”: grabbing all the items
Any words of wisdom for the future racers?
Have to map it well and make sure that everyone has a role
