Race Day Recap
Congratulations to all participants in Minneapolis who came out for another spectacular Great Urban Race! We had almost 400 Masterminds at the event and the cooperative weather made for a great day of adventure. All participants started the race at Hubert’s Sports Bar & Grill and went on to explore the streets of Minneapolis. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required patience, brains, and physical strength!
Some of our favorite clues at this event included the OakHeart challenge sponsored by Bacardi and the 60-foot rock wall. We were very impressed by everyone’s artistic abilities when it came to sculpting objects using clay. We only wish we could say the same thing about the Prince karaoke we overheard at the local theater, kidding!
A special thanks to everyone who donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charity, your efforts are truly appreciated! We’d also like to thank all of the St. Jude volunteers! We’d like to give you all a big high-five for supporting such an amazing cause.
We would also like to extend a special congratulations to our first, second and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2013 Championship Race in Puerto Rico and the chance to compete for $10,000 in prizes! In first place, Fluorophiles came dashing through the finish line with a time of 2:50! Spork 2 wasn’t too far behind at all, crossing the finish line at 2:50! Finishing right next to them was Spork 1 grabbing third place with a time of 2:50 as well! Congratulations to our very speedy, and extremely close, Top Three Teams!
We were happy to discover that “Minnesota Nice” is still the social norm in the state! Also, the costumes in Minneapolis did not disappoint. After an intense clap-off between some awesome costumes, it was Turn and Cough that won the crowd over! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day!
Thank you again to our St. Jude volunteers and all of our clue locations and of course, all of our phenomenal participants. This was our 6th year in Minneapolis and the GUR Crew had an incredible time. We look forward to seeing you again next year, thanks Minneapolis!

How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?
It was some runner’s first times, a few racer’s second, and then Christy has done 15! A combination of the team has won GUR Minneapolis the past three years.
When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?
Take a photo and send to phone-a-friends.
Did you use public transportation during the race?
Yes, two different buses.
Did you utilize ground support? If yes, how did you choose your team?
Yes. Loving spouses, friends and co-workers as well as other racers from across the country.
Did anything set you back today?
The three-structure card challenge was hard!
What was your favorite challenge?
The Bacardi Oakheart challenge and rock climbing.
What role do each of you play on the team?
Each of us have different roles: some navigate, some solve the clues, and we have a team member to keep our pace.
Any words of wisdom for the future racers? Have fun!
