Race Day Recap

Congratulations to all participants in Chicago who made Great Urban Race such an awesome success! We had around 800 Masterminds at the event and the compatible weather made for an awesome day of adventure. All participants started the race at the Cubby Bear and went on to explore the streets of Chicago. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required patience, brains, and physical strength!

Some of our favorite clues at this event included the swordplay at Forteza Fitness and brewing your own beer at Brew Camp. We were also extremely impressed with everyone’s artistic abilities at Bottles and Bottega! And who could forget the paddle boarding at Chicago SUP?

A special thanks to everyone who donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities, your efforts are truly appreciated! We’d also like to thank all of the St. Jude volunteers and each of our Chicago St. Jude Heroes! We’d like to give you all a big high-five for supporting such an amazing cause.

We would also like to extend special congratulations to our first, second and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2013 National Championship in Puerto Rico and the chance to compete for $10,000 in cash prizes! In first place, A NU Start came dashing through the finish line with a time of 2:01! Jobbers weren’t too far behind, crossing the finish line at 2:04 on the dot! And shortly after, Friddle grabbed third place with a time of 2:16! Congratulations to our very close Top Three Teams!

All of the costumes in Chicago did not disappoint. After an intense clap-off between several awesome costumes, it was Peely Fabulous that won the crowd over! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day.

Thank you again to our St. Jude volunteers, all of our clue locations and of course, all of our phenomenal participants. This was our 7th year in the Windy City and the GUR Crew had an incredible time. We look forward to seeing you again next year, thanks Chicago!

Champion Interview

With A NU Start

How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?

Three times, and we won GUR Chicago last year.

When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?

Sending the clue sheet to friends at home on the couch.

Did you use public transportation during the race?

Yes, the El is a lifesaver!

Did you utilize ground support? If yes, how did you choose your team?

Yes- it’s our friends. We’ll take them out for beers…maybe buy them breakfast too.

Did anything set you back today?

We ran to Castaways but couldn’t find the challenge right away. Once we saw it was an active challenge, we decided against it!

What was your favorite challenge?

The coffee bean transfer at Heritage Bicycle Shop

What role do each of you play on the team?

One is on the phone talking to Ground Support and is charge of keeping track of the flyers, the other keeps track of all photos.

Any words of wisdom for the future racers?
