Race Day Recap

Congratulations to all participants in Puerto Rico who came out for the 2013 National Championships! All participants started the day off at Caribe Hilton Hotel and went on to explore the streets of San Juan. Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities throughout the day that required quick thinking, problem solving, and physical tenacity!

Throughout the day our participants went to Pier 8 where they moved their hips in a salsa dancing routine. Participants also conquered their fears after feeding the birds at Pigeon Park!

Congratulations go out to our first, second, and third place teams in the Elite Eight! In first place, we had Team Vignette – KD finishing in 3:19! Team Vignette – MJ finished second with a time of 3:24 and Friddle grabbed the third place spot at 3:24!

Well-deserved rounds of applause were given to some great costumes at the 2013 National Championships, but it was Catch Us If You Can who won the crowd over. Thanks to all the teams who brought some added spirit to the day!

Thanks to our St. Jude volunteers, all of our clue locations and of course all of our amazing participants. The GUR crew had a blast celebrating another GUR-eat season and we’re already looking forward to next year!

Champion Interview

With Vignette-KD

How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?

We have won the National Championship numerous times.

How was it this year?

We had a good time. It was fun to race in a new location, and all the locals were really friendly and seemed happy to help out.

Did you utilize ground support? (phone-a-friend) If yes, how did you choose your team?

Yes, phone-a-friends. We have an extensive team that helps us solve the clue sheets and navigate us through the city.

Did anything set you back today?

In both races we solved a couple clues and plotted them in the wrong spot, which were both way out of the way. We were surprised to even make it to both races with those setbacks.

What was your favorite challenge?

Dave: The helicopter ride over San Juan was awesome! Neither of us had ever been on a helicopter. Or the mental challenge in the hotel room!

Kip: Starting the fire with flint in a parking lot.

You guys missed the Tic Tac Toe Challenge that said you had to carry the egg. What do you think about that?

We would have been disappointed if it was easier than it was. Carrying that egg and having it in every photo would have been pretty challenging!

Any words of wisdom to future racers?

Get a good support team to help google/solve and be strategic about your route/penalties.
