Race Day Recap
Congratulations to all participants who made Great Urban Race Austin 2013 such a huge success! Nearly 500 racers took to the city for a fun-filled day of adventure in Great Urban Race’s seventh year in Austin. Participants navigated from 1st to 18th street and completed a variety of unique activities that required brains, brawn and a keen knowledge of the city.
A special thanks to everyone who donated much-needed supplies to Austin Pets Alive–your efforts are truly appreciated! Thank you to St. Jude who provided excellent volunteers, as well as supported racers running on behalf of the hospital! Congratulations What The Knudson, this year’s St. Jude Fundraising Winner! They are now eligible to compete in the Puerto Rico Championship Race.
Special shout outs to our first, second and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2013 Championship Race and will have the chance to compete for $10,000! In first place, VignetteKD, came dashing through the finish line with an astounding time of 1:33! TooCoolRacingcom came in next, crossing the finish line at 1:50:14 and just seconds after that, 2coolwolves came bolting through the arch with a time of 1:50:17.
The costume contest was full of great costumes and the audience enjoyed a show from all of our Best Costume nominees. After an intense clap-off between some awesome costumes, it was the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that won the crowd over! Thanks to everyone who dressed in costume and added to the spirit of the day.
Thank you again to our St. Jude volunteers, Austin Pets Alive, all of our clue locations and of course, our phenomenal participants. The GUR Crew had an amazing time and we look forward to seeing everyone next year!

We take a photo, and look to see if we recognize anything. Then we start running.
Did you use public transportation during the race?
Did you utilize ground support? If yes, how did you choose your team?
No, but we’d choose whoever is available.
Did anything set you back today?
We couldn’t find the Zocalo location, and just ended up finding it by dumb luck.
What was your favorite challenge?
Our favorite challenges were the kayaking challenge at Austin Rowing Center and finding the dog treat in a bowl of whipped cream at Woof Gang Bakery.
What’s your team motto/ theme song?
A decent plan executed violently right now is better than the perfect plan executed tomorrow.
What role do each of you play on the team?Kip is the organizer of the crew. Dave is the photographer and in charge of taking the pictures for clue completion.
Any words of wisdom for the future racers?
