Race Day Recap
Congratulations to all participants in Philadelphia who came out for another awesome Great Urban Race! We had over 500 Masterminds at the event and the beautiful weather made for an awesome day of adventure. All participants started the day off at Cavanaugh’s River Deck and went on to explore the hidden gems of Philly! Masterminds completed a variety of unique activities that required quick thinking, problem solving, and physical tenacity!
Throughout the day our participants learned self-defense moves at Philly Urban Defense and put their face muscles to the test by moving an Oreo cookie from their foreheads to their mouths with no hands at Trio’s Trattoria! Our Masterminds celebrated Cinco de Mayo a little early at Las Cazuelas by tossing ping pong balls into a sombrero on their partner’s head.
Congratulations go out to our first, second, and third place teams who all receive a free entry to the 2013 Championship Race in San Juan, Puerto Rico and the chance to compete for $10,000! In first place, we had Vignette finishing in 1:09! Clue Explorers finished second with a time of 1:41 and Cow Pie grabbed the third place spot at 1:58!
Well-deserved rounds of applause were given to some great costumes at Great Urban Race Philly, but it was Team Skittles who won the crowd over. Thanks to all the teams who brought some added spirit to the day!
Thanks to our St. Jude Heroes and St. Jude volunteers. We’d also like to thank all of our clue locations and of course all of our amazing participants. The GUR crew had a great time and we look forward to seeing you next year, Philly!
CHAMPIONSHIP INTERVIEWWith Vignette
|How many times have you participated in Great Urban Race? Are you a past champion?||
Over 10 Great Urban Races and won two past Championships (1 in Vegas, 1 in New Orleans)!
|When you open your clue sheet, what is your first step?||
Take a picture and send it to a friend who is our ground support for the race.
|Did you use public transportation during the race?||
Not this time.
|Did you utilize ground support? If yes, how did you choose your team?||
Yes, but no one here in Philly. Our ground support is comprised of friends that have been racing together a while…typically they like computers.
|Did anything set you back today?||
Cute puppies on the course! Also the gym challenge took a while with all the laps!
|What was your favorite challenge?||
The sombrero challenge at Las Cazuelas! It was hilarious from the moment we walked in the door…ping pong balls flying everywhere!
|What’s your team motto/ theme song?||
No motto, but theme song would be “Tubthumping” by Chumbawamba.
|What role do each of you play on the team?||
Marcy- brains and directions…and sanity!
|Any words of wisdom for the future racers?||
Practice eating peppers…and never give up because you never know where you are in the race!
In the event of a Disaster including hurricanes, tornadoes, terrorism, etc. the race director and The Great Urban Race staff will decide whether or not to cancel the event based on the safety of participants and staff.
